Diego Merlin vs Juan Fraga

Boxing Daily Report from the Cuba National Finals 2024,  taking place on 11/03/2024 from Santa Clara, Cuba:

The Santa Clara venue is completely packed out with the fans turning out in force to watch the fights on offer tonight.  
Next up we have a Quarter Final fight in the Super Heavyweight divison.  

Looking to impress the boxing fans in attendance, the two fighters competing in this 3 round matchup are Diego Merlin (2 - 3) who hails from Havana, Cuba and Juan Fraga(5 - 9) from Havana, Cuba.  

Round 1: 

Merlin sidesteps to the right of his opponent and finds the target with a sharp jab.  
Fraga gets on the inside and attempts to land a right hook, but Merlin slips the shot and counters with a left hook.  
Fraga closes the distance.  Merlin is on target with a right hook.  
Fraga tries to land a jab, but Merlin parries the shot and counters with a left uppercut.  
Fraga advances into close range.  Fraga voluntarily retreats back onto the ropes...he waves his opponent in!  Merlin tries to tag Fraga on the ropes, but his opponent blocks every shot!  
Merlin hits home with a cross.  
Merlin drops his guard, and stalks his opponent...he wants his opponent to throw a shot.  Fraga attempts to land a cross, but Merlin sidesteps and counters with a right hook to Fraga's ribs.  
Fraga steps to the outside and attempts to land a jab, but Merlin blocks the shot and counters with a right uppercut.  
Fraga gets on the inside.  Merlin pivots from in front of his opponent, but Fraga drives a right hook into Merlin's ribcage.  
At the end of Round 1, lets listen in on the corners...Merlin's trainer is advising his fighter to keep his distance and coast to the win.

Fraga gets on the inside.  Merlin throws a short cross to the body, but lands low!  The ref stops the action.  The ref sends Fraga to the neutral corner.  He threatens Merlin with a point deduction if he keeps fouling.
