Ben Daun vs Rex Maddex

Boxing Daily Report from the AI New Zealand-Wellington promoted show at Stuart Stealey Gym, Wellington,  taking place on 05/02/2026:

There are plenty of empty seats out here tonight, with the show nowhere near close to selling out.  
Next up is the main event of the show.  This is a final eliminator for the New Zealand-Wellington Cruiserweight title.  

Looking to impress the boxing fans in attendance, the two fighters competing in this 10 round matchup are Ben Daun (8 - 5 - 6) who hails from Wellington, New Zealand and Rex Maddex(4 - 7 - 3) from Wellington, New Zealand.  Both Daun and Maddex weighed in at 200 pounds.  
The referee tonight is Jonathan Laurie, and the three ringside judges are Geoff Symington, Mel Binner and Erorangi Muunu.  

Round 1: 

Daun lands a right hook.  
Maddex quickly sidesteps from in front of his opponent.  Maddex throws a jab, but his opponent sidesteps and counters with a cross.  
Daun lands a right hook.  Daun ties up his opponent.  Maddex pushes his forearm into Daun's face.  The ref separates the two fighters.  
Daun closes the distance and throws a right hook, but his opponent steps away from the shot.  Daun ties up his opponent.  Maddex is leaning on his opponent in the clinch. The ref separates the two fighters.  
Maddex throws a left hook, but the shot is blocked.  Daun ties up his opponent.  Daun hits his opponent with a kidney shot within the clinch. The ref breaks Daun's hold and signals for the fight to continue.  
Maddex attempts to land a cross, but Daun blocks the shot and counters with a right hook.  
Daun hits home with a right hook.  
At the end of Round 1, lets listen in on the corners...Maddex's trainer is suggesting ways of getting through to his opponent.  Maddex's trainer is telling his fighter he needs to be more active or he's going to get outworked.

Daun throws a left hook, but the shot is blocked.  Daun holds on to his opponent.  Maddex throws a hook within the clinch but hits his opponent behind the head. The ref separates the two fighters.  
Maddex hits home with a right hook.  The two boxers are fighting in-close, but their heads clash!  The ref does not appear to have noticed the clash as Daun dabs at his face checking for damage.

The ref acknowledges the accidental headclash but allows the action to continue.    It looks like the clash of heads has caused some damage to Maddex.  That has caused slight swelling  around the left eye.
